Aid Delivered to Java Flood Survivors


In December 2007 a large scale flood occurred covering over half of the province of East Java and some parts of its neighboring province of Central Java affecting over 19 regions, an area as large as the Netherlands. Millions of people suffered due to the floods a thousands of farms and fields full of rice crops were completely destroyed. In May 2007, Muslim Aid funded by UN OCHA, sent 45,168 kg of rice, vitamins, 25,000 strips of Aquatabs, 13,750 sachets of ORS, hygiene kits, and hygiene kits to Lamongan, Tubuan, Pasuruan (East Java), and Pati in Central Java. The aid was received by the affected communities, "This has helped us survive longer, at least until we can get back on our own two feet" said Sri, a senior citizen of Lamongan after receiving food item from Muslim Aid.
Muslim Aid continues to gives aid one month after the flooding as the water begins to recede. The local government expressed its appreciation for Muslim Aid’s assistance.

“Everybody has been very helpful to us, the Muslim Aid team is very grateful for the excellent assistance that we get from the local leaders, local government and the community,” said Joko Yuliantoro, the Emergency Team Leader.
Muslim Aid has assisted 12,500 households in East and Central Java during its relief efforts from December 2007 to April 2008. The effort was funded by Muslim Aid UK, Muslim Aid Australia, and UN OCHA. As part of the assistance, Muslim Aid delivered a community-based disaster management in the District of Ngawi, a district which is annually flooded, to help the community prepare themselves on how to manage and cope with the disasters.
